Taking No Chances

Greetings, friends!

I took no chance today, I was determined and excited to be in the House of the Lord, today, the last Sunday in December for 2013.  GOD blessed me to see this new day with an early start.  I jumped up with excitement, in prayer and praise. I even got in 30 minutes of exercise before I made my way to the House of The Lord.  As I reflect on these past 52 weeks, I can honestly say that GOD has kept me in perfect peace: peace of mind and peace of heart.  GOD has supplied my every need.  GOD has touched and healed my body.  GOD has protected me from all harm and danger, seen and unseen. For all this, I give HIM the glory.

I am taking NO chances in this life, every breath, every second, every minute, every hour, every day I will give GOD the honor and glory.  I will continue to declare that JESUS CHRIST IS LORD.

I am reminded of King Hezekiah in 2 King 20:1-7
"In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying, I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LordAnd I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake. And Isaiah said, Take a lump of figs. And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered."

King Hezekiah was spared with 15 more years, that does mean GOD will spare me or you for 15 more years.  In the meantime, I will serve the LORD with all my heart, mind and soul.

BEING COMPASSIONATE

Question of Faith: What is the most difficult message for people to accept?

RMany faiths celebrate many festivals at this time of year. For many faith leaders, the pressure to prepare a meaningful message that resonates with their congregants is of utmost importance.
We asked local faith leaders what message is the most difficult message to get across to their congregation? What idea/tenet/concept is the most difficult for people to accept? What provides a mental hurdle for them?
Therese Warrick, Founder/Ministry Leader, Sisters Road to Freedom Inc.: The most difficult message I believe I must get across is the need for compassion. Compassion must be a way of life for us as believers, disciples and followers of Jesus Christ. The Synoptic Gospels recorded Jesus' 33 years on earth and every step of the way Jesus walked and served compassionately, especially to the least of these. He healed the sick, fed multitudes, made the lame to walk, dumb to talk, and the blind to see. He cast out demonic spirits and taught his father's word in homes and in synagogues. He encouraged and inspired multitudes, and gave hope to the hopeless. He forgave those who persecuted and crucified him.
Compassion must be shown each day, not just during Christmas or Hanukkah, Kwanzaa or the winter solstice. God's love for each of us is every day, not during a certain season.
The body of Christ must strive to be Christ-like and do for the least of these just as Christ did when he lived on this earth. I pray that places of worship all over Kentucky will take a stand for compassion. I pray that God will break our mental hurdles and prick our hearts that we will love and be compassionate to the least of these, not only at this time of year, but every day of the week throughout the year.

Get Back To Church

Greetings friends!

The Psalmist, David, had sung, "I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the House of the LORD." Psalm 122:1 (KJV)

Unfortunately, I have found that there are so many women who cannot relate to this Song of David in the Bible.  I have been told by several women that they no longer have an interest in attending church.  When I inquired of the reason(s), the women's answers were all similar:  someone in authority hurt them (abused, lied, cheated).

I decided to do some research on this issue and I found an article written by Ms. Jaimie Bowman called, "Why Women Are Leaving The Church".  Ms. Bowman's article documented the findings of the Barna Group's (The Barna Group provides research and training for churches, non-profits, and businesses.) research on "Women and Faith" which was released in August of 2011.

FINDINGS BY THE BARNA GROUP:
*Since 1991, church attendance by women has dropped 11% and weekly Bible reading has plummeted by 10% – to just 4 out of 10 women.

*The only religious behavior that increased among women in the last 20 years was becoming "unchurched." That statistic was raised by 17%. However, there was an increase in women who say that Jesus Christ is their personal Lord and Savior – an increase from 38% in 1991 to 44% in 2011.

After reviewing those findings, I am reminded of what the author of the Book of Hebrews recorded.  "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV)

The Day is approaching and now is the time to forgive those who have wronged us. It is time for us to come together and dwell in unity.  Psalm 133:1 encourages, "Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!" (KJV)

As a disciple of Jesus Christ, I will not be discouraged, but will keep encouraging and inviting women to attend church so they can have that worship experience for themselves. Church is the place where the body of Christ comes together to praise and worship GOD. It is the place to fellowship with other believers and it is the place where we can edify and exhort each other in the name of Jesus.

In Christ,
Therese from Belize

Type "C" Personality?

An article caught my attention in "Women Of Spirit" magazine. The article, "Is There A Type C Personality? - The Cancer Connection" was very interesting. I knew about types A (high strong, driven and competitive) and B (relaxed, creative, expressive), but didn't know there was even a Type C (overly nice and nurturing, passive, prefers appeasing others; tends to repress anger and other strong emotions).

Research has been conducted and apparently some researchers suggest that the Type C personality may be more prone to cancer. Dr. Monty Sellon, Family Practice Physician indicated that "It's not the cancer that gives them that personality, but it may be that personality suppresses their immune system and makes them more susceptible to some cancers." Of course, this research has much further to expand because it is not empirically strong. In fact, a lot of prominent doctors and researchers have called this study "a lot of bunk".

A Spiritual Awakening

Greetings!

The other night I tuned in with great expectation to listen to Evangelist Billy Graham's My Hope For America message.  His 30 minute message was titled, "The Cross".

Evangelist Billy Graham spoke clearly that our country is in great need of spiritual awakening. When he said that, I knew that GOD had an urgent message for HIS people through Evangelist Graham.

Evangelist Graham declared boldly that we use "the cross" lightly. He warned that the cross is not the cross that hangs on our walls in our homes, and it is not that pendant that hangs around the necks of rock stars. The Cross is that old rugged Cross that directly confronts the evil which dominates this world.  He further declared that The Cross is an offense to people because it demands, doesn't suggest, but it demands a new lifestyle in all of us.

2 Corinthians 5:17 declares, " Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:The old has gone, the new is here!" (NIV)

Friends, my testimony and that of Lecrae Moore, Christian artist, is that we couldn't live the life so Jesus lived it for us and Jesus died the death that we should have died. Evangelist Graham reminded us that the blood of Jesus Christ which HE shed for us is that meeting place between God and man.  I thank God for the new! I thank God for the renewal of my mind and of my body and of my soul. Hallelujah.

I thank God for the redeeming blood of Jesus Christ.  Jesus took my shame and your shame when they nailed him to that old rugged cross.  Hallelujah to the name of Jesus.  HE is worthy of our praise. We are not dead, Christ is not dead. Time for that spiritual awakening. Our God is NOT dead, HE is alive and HIS blood still works!  Someone has to know and believe that God so loved the world that HE gave HIS only begotten SON that whosoever believeth in HIM shall not perish but have everlasting life. Amen.

Wake up my friends, Christ is coming back! BE PREPARED.

Therese From Belize

SISTERS ROAD TO FREEDOM, INC.'S FREE LEGAL CLINIC FOR WOMEN

That Secret Place

Greetings, friends!  I pray all is well with each of you.

I have been meditating on the I remember when things were not going my way, especially when I was under stress, I would often mouth off about "disappearing to a secret island by myself." Silly me .... thinking that physically disappearing to a secret island would rid me of the stress and difficulties of life. Now, because I know what God's Word tells me, I know I don't need to disappear to any secret place.

Psalm 91:1 declares, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." (King James Version)  Rev. Dr. Williams, Senior Pastor of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, brought home this message even more clearer for me. Rev. Dr. Williams suggested that the secret place is spiritual. Ahh, it has to do with living under the will of God! Rev. Dr. Williams encouraged that while you are in captivity, you can still go to that secret place. The secret place is an experience with God that captivates you. The secret place is the innermost man beyond any distraction. It is the "prayer closet".

What Is On Your Book List?

Greetings in the name of Jesus Christ.

I love to read!  I have several authors that I like and some that I have every publication of their works.  There are so many books I still want to read.  Some friends would tell me to read a self help book, some would tell me of a great Christian author.  However, now is just not the time.  I cannot ignore what I am seeing and hearing and feeling around me.  So, no matter what is on New York Times Best Seller List, or what new book my friends are suggesting, one thing I know, no one needs to tell me I need to read, study and meditate on the anointed Word of God.  His Word is found in the BIBLE. While it is still the world's best-selling and most widely distributed book, I would be bold to say: 1) it is a book that is gathering the most dust on bookshelves; and, 2) it is the book that is most widely read, but not followed by its readers.

Friends, we are in perilous times. Now is the time to read, study and meditate on the Word of the Lord.  What I am seeing and hearing and feeling are rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places. What my eyes are witnessing are Believers getting pulled into the lies, deceit, trickery and mockery of the enemy.

Psalm 1:1-6 assures us, "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked leads to destruction." (NIV)

In 2 Timothy 3:1-7, it is recorded, "But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people. They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth." (NIV)

Friends, we must stand and stand firm in God's Word. We cannot be swayed.  2 Timothy 3:12-17 encourages us, "In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, while evildoers and impostors will go from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God[a] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (NIV)

The only book for me is the B-I-B-L-E.  There is this song I used to sing as a little girl in Sunday School class,

The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes, that's the book for me,
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E.

The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes that's the book for me,
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E.

The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes that's the book for me,
I read and pray, trust and obey,
The B-I-B-L-E.

Adults Are Bullies Too: Say What?

Greetings, friends!

Often, when we speak or write about bullying, we are usually addressing problems that children and youth are experiencing.  However, adults do bully other adults and with social media, such as Facebook, adult bullying is taking place more than ever before.

Bullying is a problem that has affected children and youth from all backgrounds of life.  As parents, we pray our children do not get bullied and we pray that our children are not the bullies. Now, as an adult, not only am I concerned about my children being bullied, but I am also concerned about experiencing bullying because I do not dress a certain way, or smell a certain way, or look a certain way, or worship a certain way, or cross my legs in a certain way or wear my hair in a certain way, etc.  With social media being at its height, people are being scrutinized and criticized for any and everything.

According to writer, Susan Campbell Cross, in her article on Shape.com, she herself had been bullied on social media.  She indicated that recent data reveals that adult bullying is on the rise.  In a 2012 survey of workers, 65 percent of American participants reported being bullied at their jobs, and adult bullying happens online and among social circles as well. (www.shape.com, "Three Ways To Smack Down A Grown-up Bully")

It grieves my heart when Christians humiliate others and this is evident on social media, specifically, Facebook.  So what if someone is showing their cleavage in church? At least they are in church receiving a Word from the Lord. So what if a young lady is wearing a too short skirt? That does not means she is not marriage material.  And, thank God that she has sense enough to pursue her educational goals. So what if a man does not smell a certain way? Why criticize him because he may not be able to afford an expensive bottle of cologne? Words do hurt, and you do not not know what a person is going through when make your public nay-saying about him/her. How can someone correct his/her behavior if you choose to address the issue on social media instead of addressing the issue with the person directly?  How can a young woman learn etiquette if you choose to talk about her instead of taking her under your wings and teach her the correct way?  As believers, we should be concerned about whether a person knows Christ as their personal Savior, not what they are wearing or how they smell or how they look or how they speak.

Friends, now is the time to unite as one body of Christ, banding together to break strongholds and tear down walls.  Now is the time to be encouragers in Christ.  Now is the time to speak love and show love for our brothers and sisters, despite how they dress or how they smell or how they look.  Our words and actions can seriously discourage or even turn someone away from following the Lord. When God cleans us up, HE cleans us up from the inside out; not from the outside in.

We are losing focus as adults, as members in the body of Christ. I am reminded of what the Lord had told Samuel,as found in 1 Samuel 16:7, "But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”" (NIV)

Here are some biblical examples of people God used despite how they looked or how they smelled or how they dressed or what they did. God is concerned with our hearts, not our outside appearance.

Rahab, the prostitute (Joshua 2)
Noah, the drunk (Genesis 9)
Samaritan woman at the well (John 4)
Woman with the 12- year issue of blood (Luke 8)
Paul, persecutor of Christians (Acts 9)

My challenge for us today is that we will be concerned about the welfare of our men and women, young ladies and young men.  My challenge is that we will be compassionate and kind toward each other.   I encourage you, Believers of Christ, next time you have the desire to make fun or degrade or humiliate another person, think twice about doing so.

Let us be the example of what God's love is about.

In Christ,
Therese from Belize

Min. Angela Lee Price's Study of Millennials & The Church - Part 1

Millennials & The Church, Part 1

By:  Angela Lee Price
If the Kingdom of God is to advance, it behooves the church to think innovatively in reaching the largest demographic, the Millennial Generation with the gospel of Jesus Christ.  If you are a pastor, minister, lay leader struggling to keep young people in your church, or just a concerned parent wondering why your young adult won't go to church, this should begin to help answer questions for you.

Part 1:  Introduction

A tidal wave of change is beating against our global shores. The Millennial Generation is coming of age, and with more than 78 million members, they are coming in like a flood.  For the marketers especially this means good news. They whistle while they work targeting goods, services, and experiences to a generation that has moved beyond the final frontier of space and time to boldly go where no man has gone before. However, the Psalmist declared in ancient of days, “I will cause Thy name to be remembered in all generations” (Ps. 45:17).  The Psalmist declared, “I will bless the Lord at all times, his praises shall continually be in my mouth.”  The question that begs to be answered and remains to be seen is will the Millennial Generation born between 1980 and 2000, and raised in a postmodern era where choice is abundant, there are no absolutes and technology is ever-changing – will they bless the Lord?
If the Millennial Generation is to “bless the Lord at all times,” they will need much more spiritual nurturing and guidance from the preceding generations, Generation X, the Baby Boomers, and the Silents.  Although there is a lot of good news to report statistically, relationally, educationally, and potentially financially for the Millennials, one ominous statistic remains, this population is largely apathetic to and uninvolved with church.   Roughly, only one-fourth of Millennials attend church weekly.  Consequently, many Millennials do not know what they believe or why they believe it as they cannot clearly define their beliefs.  Getting to know young adults under age 33 must become priority to the church as no church exists without a multi generational mix of some sort.  Theirs is a vast mission field.  Helping them come to know and remember the name of the Lord is how we advance the Kingdom in this age.

Molding Of Generation Divas Summer Program A Huge Success

Read more here: http://www.kentucky.com/2013/08/03/2748602/molding-of-generation-divas-teaches.html#storylink=cpy
At the program, called Molding of Generation Divas, Zantonia, who attends Lexington Traditional Middle School, said she learned "how to keep our face clean, how to make ourselves beautiful and have good confidence ... and just how to be a young lady."
She and her mother, Cherie Jones, were among 13 mothers and 39 girls ages 10 to 17 who attended the event at the Lexington Public Library downtown. The event was sponsored by the Sisters Road to Freedom, a non-profit that provides services to women.
The organization's founder and director, Therese Warrick, said she developed the event to help participants develop healthy bodies and minds. "Unhealthy eating habits and lack of physical activities are affecting the behavior and social growth of our teen girls," Warrick said.
Professionals at the event held sessions on physical activities, nutrition, etiquette, and skin and hair care.
Hair stylist Kahndra Franklin of Lexington's TKO Hair Studio told the girls, "Don't be lazy with your hair ... be consistent in your care. As much you as you brush your teeth, you need to wash your face."
The program was free and open to women and girls and Central Kentucky. The day ended with each girl getting a book bag full of school supplies.
"I thought it would be a good program for my 13-year-old," said Jackie Graves. "It has been awesome."
Graves said she was glad lessons on etiquette at the dining table were offered. Her daughter Janae Stevenson, 13, was looking for pointers on another front.
"I would like to keep my hair looking good even though I play sports," said Janae, who attends Leestown Middle School.
Melinda Diallo, who lives in Woodford County, said she brought her daughters Jalinda Fead, 15, and Jada Pertee, 10, so they could hear from someone other than her about good nutrition and hair care.
"I learned that I needed to take good care of my body in order to stay healthy," Jada said.

Women Pursuing Higher Education - Options Available

Greetings!

I have received several comments from you regarding the inspiring blog I wrote, "Women Empowering Themselves Through Higher Education" on July 21, 2013.
I also received an email from Joshua John, the Community Relations Manager for MBA@UNC, the online MBA program offered from the University of North Carolina-Chapel-Chapel Hill thanking me for referencing the resource.  Mr. John wanted to make sure that women are aware of the online MBA program offered at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
I have added a link to the program site.  This program may offer exactly what you need in pursuing higher education, while working a full time job and raising a family.

Women Empowering Themselves Through Higher Education

According to 2012 statistics, women pursuing MBA’s are at an all-time high – they make up 1/3 of all MBA candidates.
In an article published in Forbes magazine, according to Angie Chang (Editor-in-Chief, Women 2.0) & Harrison Kratz (Community Manager, MBA@UNC), in 2012, women continue to leave their mark in business in industries around the world. Not only are women starting companies at 1.5 times the national average, women are also excelling in the classroom at record numbers; women now hold more bachelors and graduate degrees than men.
Rather than having the conversation of having women in the workplace, the conversation has evolved into having women lead teams, companies, and ultimately drive results across the boards.

As I read this article, I am reminded of a wonderful, inspiring woman, Mrs. Fanny Jackson Coppin. Mrs. Jackson Coppin was as a teacher, principal, lecturer, missionary to Africa, and warrior against the most cruel oppression.  Born a slave in the nation’s capital, the child Fanny was purchased by an aunt. Another aunt took the little girl in, but Fanny had to go out and work as a domestic, getting schooling whenever she could. By age fourteen, she was supporting herself in Newport, Rhode Island, and struggling for education. “It was in me,” she wrote years later, “to get an education and to teach my people. This idea was deep in my soul.” She attended Rhode Island State Normal School and then Oberlin College, where her achievements were amazing. She was the first black person chosen to be a pupil-teacher there. In her senior year, she organized evening classes to teach freedmen.
After her graduation in 1865, Fanny Jackson was appointed to the Institute for Colored Youth, a Quaker school in Philadelphia. Within four years, she became head principal, from which position she influenced two generations of young people. In a letter to Frederick Douglass in 1876, she explained her commitment: “I feel sometimes like a person to whom in childhood was entrusted some sacred flame…This is the desire to see my race lifted out of the mire of ignorance, weakness and degradation; no longer to sit in obscure corners and devour the scraps of knowledge which his superiors flung at him. I want to see him crowned with strength and dignity; adorned with the enduring grace of intellectual attainments.”
Her school was centered on this dream. She expanded the curriculum to include an Industrial Department, established a Women’s Industrial Exchange to display the mechanical and artistic works of young women, and founded a Home for Girls and Young Women to house workers from out of town. Moreover, she persuaded employers to hire her pupils in capacities that would utilize their education.
In 1881, she married Rev. Levi J. Coppin, a prominent A.M.E. minister, and together they were a driving force in Black America. She continued her work at the school but added missionary work to her interests. Mrs. Coppin retired from her beloved school in 1902 at age 65 and began a new career. She accompanied her husband, now a bishop, to Cape Town, South Africa, where she was an effective missionary, counseling African women. She returned to Philadelphia in 1907, broken in health but not in spirit. In her last years, she completed her autobiography, Reminiscences of School Life, which remains a record of a remarkable life. Fanny Jackson Coppin died in 1913 at age 76. Perhaps her greatest accomplishment was her influence on her students. She prodded them toward excellence. She made them dream. She made them become more than they ever thought they could. Frances (Fanny) Marion Jackson Coppin was, indeed, a model of academic excellence—both in her life and in the heritage that she has bequeathed to those who followed.

Keep achieving because with GOD all things are possible and you can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.

Blessings in Christ,
